Mobile media company Player X has extended the reach of its mobile TV channel geekTV by signing deals with two more UK operators and in territories as diverse as India, Australasia and South America.
The news follows geekTV’s success since its launch in December 2006 on 3 UK and the O2 i-mode channel and underlines the proactive moves Player X is making in the mobile TV and video space. Earlier this month the company announced an exclusive deal with Aardman Animations to distribute its premium mobile video content in North America.
geekTV is a mixture of well-known entertainment brands such as Miami Vice, American Dad and Mr Bean’s Holiday, original IP and user-generated content that appeals to the important 16-to-30-year-old demographic. The channel comes on an hour-long streamed loop, is updated weekly and, unlike other streamed terrestrial TV channels, subscribers can use the EPG to start and pause whereever they choose.
"We have been delighted by the success of geekTV on UK operator decks. We’ve dedicated 18 months of hard work to this initiative and now we’re reaping the rewards with these deals. geekTV is the masthead of our mobile TV proposition and we will be launching another channel later this summer,” said Tony Pearce, Player X CEO.
Player X has invested heavily in the mobile video space and recently announced a ground-breaking deal with Universal Mobile Entertainment for making mobile retrosodes of 1970s TV shows Knight Rider and Magnum, P.I. - the first time a Hollywood studio has allowed its content to be used in such a way.
The company's efforts in mobile video were recognised in 2006 when Player X was the Runner-Up in the Best Video Producer category at last year's prestigious Mobile Entertainment awards.
